Cuban Salsa / Rueda de Casino

Salsa is a vibrant and expressive dance that evolved from a fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms and musical styles, including Son, Rumba, Mambo, and Cha-cha-cha. It’s known for its high energy, playful turn patterns and arm tangles.

There are different styles of Salsa, including Cuban Salsa, characterised by its circular movements, playful footwork, and smooth body movement, and linear LA Style Salsa, characterised by sharp lines, spins, with a strong emphasis on performance and musical hits. We teach Cuban Salsa at Havana on the Hastings.

Rueda de Casino is a group dance that incorporates Cuban Salsa, where dancers form a circle and change partners in a lively and interactive way, guided by a leader who calls out the moves. Rueda is very popular within our community for good reasons! Mike and Kellie have a special passion for rueda given this is how they met.

Bachata

Bachata is a dynamic and romantic dance that originated in the Dominican Republic. Today, it's danced in three main styles, often blended together within the same song.

  • Traditional (Dominican) Bachata focuses on intricate footwork, rhythm, and playful partner interaction.

  • Modern Bachata introduces turn patterns with a bit more structure.

  • Sensual Bachata brings smooth body movement, connection, and musical interpretation to the forefront.

Bachata is easier to pick up than salsa, making it a perfect entry point if you're new to Latin dance. The basic steps are simple, the music is infectious, and you'll be amazed at how quickly you can dance with confidence (and finally tell your left foot from your right!). It’s also a fantastic way to improve coordination, rhythm, and partner connectionall while having a great time.

Whether you're looking for fun, fitness, or a touch of romance, Bachata is a great place to start.

Kizomba / Urban Kiz

Kizomba is a popular dance and music genre that originated in Angola, known for its slower, smooth flowing movements, it combines elements of traditional Angolan Semba music with influences from Caribbean Zouk.

Urban Kiz is a modern evolution of Kizomba that incorporates more urban and contemporary dance styles, including hip hop & tango, often featuring intricate footwork and dynamic body movements.

It’s all about connection, control, and dancing to the beat of modern, chilled music. If you love tango, then you’ll almost certainly enjoy Urban Kiz. There is more space for interpretation of the music than other styles.

This dance is more about how you feel dancing with your partner, rather than making it look flashy for people watching you.
